NeverEnding Story First English-Chinese Bilingual Haiku and Tanka Blog
first snowflakes
on the wreckage
of a boat...
the same dog from yesterday
waiting on the shore
Eucalypt, 7, 2014
Chinese Translation (Traditional)
初雪
覆蓋一條船
的殘骸 ...
昨天來的那隻狗
仍在岸邊等候 Chinese Translation (Simplified)
初雪
覆盖一条船
的残骸 ...
昨天来的那只狗
仍在岸边等候
"Lavana's tanka is concise with vivid imagery and tightly structured with a strong emotional undercurrent. Each line adds something significant to the poem, culminating in the final line, which strongly underlies the dog's unwavering loyalty to its master. This heartfelt tanka reminds me one of my haiku, which was inspired by a real-life event:
ghost bike
locked to the lamppost...
a beagle at dusk
Croatian Translation
bicikl kraj puta
lzakljucan za stup lampe...
bigl u sumrak
Iris, 1, 2015
Note: A ghost bike is a bicycle set up as a roadside memorial in a place where a cyclist was killed"
